One of the oldest standing relics of Deadwood’s rich and eventful past, the Historic Bullock Hotel is another popular destination in the old town. While it is true the gaming facilities aren’t among the best in the area, the hotel attracts large numbers of visitors every year. It also boasts a fine dining area, an events space for small weddings, and easy access to many of the town’s main attractions. Keep reading our Historic Bullock Hotel review for the full report!

Historic Bullock Hotel: What to Expect

As we’ve alluded to briefly above, the Historic Bullock Hotel is probably most famous for its hotel. Remember the acclaimed series Unsolved Mysteries? If you do, you might recall seeing it in a special feature program way back in 1993! The episode looked at the life of Seth Bullock, after whom the hotel is named, and responded to reports of paranormal activity at the venue! To learn more about the hotel, skip ahead to the accommodation section — or any other that interests you — using the content navigation tool above.

Historic Bullock Hotel Casino Games

The Historic Bullock Hotel games offering is limited to the 20 or so slot machines on the gaming floor. Included in the range are classic, old-timer slots with three reels and a few video slots for players who enjoy more up-to-date titles. Coin denominations range from $0.01 to $5.00, so no matter your budget, there’s always the opportunity to have a spin! In addition, to give all players full peace of mind, all games are tested for fairness by the South Dakota Commission on Gaming.

Due to its Class II license, the Historic Bullock Hotel games selection doesn’t include live table games such as roulette, craps, poker or blackjack. While we appreciate this is far from ideal if you’re a fan of live table action, the good news is, Deadwood is full of all-purpose gambling venues that hold full gaming licenses. Within a mile radius around the venue, you’ll find more than ten venues with a full games catalogue.

As you can see from the list element above, the Historic Bullock Hotel games selection isn’t the most extensive. However, as we’ve mentioned in the section above, Deadwood is brimming with top-quality casinos with a more complete games list. One venue, the Mineral Palace Hotel and Gaming complex, has over 320 slots machines and a fantastic selection of live table games. Best of all, it’s just a short walk away from the Bullock.

No Online Games

Because of the strict laws and regulations around online betting in the state of South Dakota (S.D), you won’t find any services of this kind at the Bullock. Beware of any sites advertising online betting in exchange of real money: if you happen to come across any, there’s a more than fair chance it’s a scam. You’re best advised to keep checking back here for updates. There have been several reports of discussions in the state legislature, which may lead to a change to the law in the coming months.

No Promotions

A sack of gold coins.

Unfortunately, there are no Historic Bullock Hotel promotions to speak of here. Due to the limited casino games on offer, we understand the lack of promotions in the games room. However, there’s no real reason why there can’t be at least one promotion on food at the restaurant, on rates at the hotel, or even occasional slots tournaments. We must say, we were a little disappointed with the turnout here.

Even though the Bullock doesn’t have any promotions in the casino or elsewhere, Deadwood is full of casinos offering special deals. One venue in particular, the Silverado Franklin Historic Hotel Gaming complex, is just around the corner and has loads of promotions to choose from. With deals for the games room, the restaurant, special events, and more, you really are spoiled for choice.

No Loyalty Scheme

VIP written in gold letters.

Similar to promotions, there aren’t any loyalty schemes on offer here. This means that no matter how often you visit and play at the Bullock, you won’t reap any benefits, which is a massive shame. It’s not all bad news though. As we’ve already mentioned, Deadwood is blessed with a fine selection of gambling complexes, so you don’t have to look very hard to find great loyalty schemes. In particular, we really like the perks at the First Gold Gaming Resort. Here, loyal members receive free play coupons and get entry to exclusive, hot seat cash giveaways, prize draws, and plenty more.

No Sports Betting

Much the same as with online betting, sports betting has been prohibited in the state of S.D for quite some time now. Strict laws and regulations currently in place mean you’ll be hard-pressed to find a casino in Deadwood — or anywhere else — with these kinds of services. However, we’ve been keeping a close eye on gambling-related news as of late, and we’ve learned that the state is reconsidering its hardline approach to sports betting. We may see a breakthrough some time in the future, so keep checking back for official updates.

Alternative Attractions in Deadwood

We appreciate that many of our readers will be keen to visit Deadwood and take full advantage of all the gambling facilities available in town. However, no trip to Deadwood is complete unless you sample some of the non-gambling related attractions in the area. While the Bullock itself doesn’t offer much in this department, there’s lots to see and do in Deadwood. Learn all about some of the attractions in the following sections.

Anyone who’s had the pleasure of staying at the Historic Bullock Hotel will probably agree that it’s the venue’s main attraction. With just 26 rooms and 2 deluxe suites, it’s not the largest venue; however, its unique decor and rich heritage can rival that of any other in the area. Bear in mind, however, that its price tag means it’s probably best suited for travelers who don’t mind stretching the purse strings a little.

The hotel is in a really great location in Deadwood. It’s right on Main Street, so you’re never more than a stone’s throw away from all the main activities, which includes countless more gaming complexes. In addition, it’s easy to reach both by road and air. The nearest airport is in Rapid City — less than an hour away — and Deadwood connects easily to the Interstate 90. The only real downside is the lack of public leisure facilities; however, superior suites come with a Jacuzzi.

Family-Friendly Attractions

Unfortunately, there really isn’t much to talk about when it comes to on-site Historic Bullock Hotel events. If you’re looking for family-friendly things to do without leaving the venue, you can always enjoy a meal in Bully’s restaurant, which has stunning and original 19th-century decor and a huge, cozy fireplace. Aside from this though, you’ll have to venture into town to find cool things to do. Fortunately, Deadwood is packed with museums, historic sites, nature trails and plenty more. You’ll also find live music concerts, food and drink festivals, and racing events, to name but a few.

Congratulations: you’ve made it to the conclusion section of our Historic Bullock Hotel review! The time has come for the all-important end result.
